I love cooking with cannabis—because I love cannabis. I discovered its virtues as a culinary herb only after I discovered its medicinal benefits. I had struggled for years to find a treatment—everything from natural to pharmaceutical—for dysmenorrhea and associated hormonal craziness. I found that cannabis is the only medicine that can help. (And it has, indeed, been proven to be better at treating women’s pain because females have higher estrogen levels that make us sensitive to it.)
I’m far from alone. I’m among 2.4 million registered medical marijuana users in the United States, and a PatientsLikeMe survey found that 76 percent of patients use cannabis because other treatments didn’t work or caused too many side effects. A 2011 poll of medical cannabis patients in California found that half of them used cannabis as a substitute for prescription medications.
As more and more people discover these benefits, the medical establishment and mainstream America are—finally—taking note. In my home state of Colorado, where medical marijuana has been legal for quite some time, nearly everyone knows someone who has benefitted from this healing, helping plant. I dream of a world in which everyone, everywhere, can have access.
